Suzanis, (or needleworks - suzan being the word for needle) are the hand-embroideries created by the women of the families for the young girls doweries. The design is traditionally drawn by the grandmother, and is then sewn by the younger women in the family. They are often worked in narrow strips and joined afterwards to make the larger hangings or throws. Varying in size from small squares to large double bed-covers or curtains, and in design according to the area in Central Asia from which they originate, these are wonderful and unique works of art.
